Old Hollywood glamor and the Del Mar Race Track are deeply intertwined, as both represent a bygone era of elegance, sophistication, and celebrity culture. Here’s a look at how these two icons came together and why they continue to capture the imagination of many today:

The Del Mar Race Track was founded in 1937 by Bing Crosby, along with his Hollywood friends, including actors Pat O'Brien and Gary Cooper. Crosby’s involvement added an extra layer of celebrity appeal, making the track an instant hotspot for Hollywood’s elite.

Bing Crosby coined the famous slogan "Where the Turf Meets the Surf," reflecting the track’s beautiful coastal location in Del Mar, California. This unique setting, near the Pacific Ocean, made it an attractive destination for both racing fans and celebrities seeking leisure.

During its heyday, Del Mar was known as a playground for Hollywood's elite. Stars like Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, and Lucille Ball were regular visitors, enjoying the races and the glamorous social scene that the track offered. The exclusive Turf Club was a popular spot for mingling with fellow stars.

In 1938, Del Mar hosted a famous match race between the legendary racehorse Seabiscuit and Ligaroti. This event drew enormous attention and solidified Del Mar’s reputation as a top-tier racing venue. It was a defining moment that showcased the excitement and prestige of horse racing at Del Mar.

Architectural Elegance

The Del Mar Race Track’s architecture reflects its glamorous roots. The grandstand was designed by William Pereira, a noted architect who worked on projects like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The design combined Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles, mirroring the elegance of Hollywood itself.

These facts highlight the enduring appeal and influence of Old Hollywood glamour and the storied history of the Del Mar Race Track, both of which continue to captivate audiences today.
